35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
January 22, 2008 marks the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that affirmed a woman's constitutional right to an abortion. By a vote of 7 to 2, the justices legalized abortion and instantly voided state laws prohibiting abortion. After the historic decision, states immediately began passing restrictive legislation. Congress passed the Hyde Amendment in 1976, which withholds federal Medicaid funding for abortions for poor women except to save a woman’s life. Today, a woman's right to choose remains under serious attack and still plays a major role in presidential politics. Candidates' statements about choice can be viewed here.
